Get Ahead of the Game

Sports photography can be almost as competitive as the action on the pitch. That’s why we developed the EOS R1– a camera that lets you shoot faster, capture defining moments, and get images and video back to your client first – winning the top spot on the page.

  • 24.2 megapixel back-illuminated stacked sensor
  • Up to 40 fps continuous shooting speed
  • 6K RAW video up to 60p
  • DIGIC Accelerator
  • Action-priority mode
  • All new Eye control AF

Since 1989, Canon EOS-1 series cameras have led the way for professional sports, news and action photographers. As the result of 35 years of evolution the EOS R1 looks to the future as the flagship EOS camera.

24.2 megapixel, back-illuminated, stacked sensor

The EOS R1 features a 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor that uses a back-illuminated, stacked design to deliver superb sensitivity, brilliant resolution and incredible speed.

The speed you need

Capture fleeting moments with a customisable continuous shooting speed of up to 40fps, a 1/64,000 sec. top shutter speed and virtually zero rolling-shutter distortion. Pre-capture lets photographers capture moments before the shutter release is pressed.

Focusing on performance

Deep-learning and Cross-type AF identifies and tracks subjects with phenomenal accuracy. The DIGIC Accelerator processor powers Action Priority mode, which automatically determines the main subject in football, volleyball and basketball, moving AF areas accordingly.

Hybrid creativity

Shoot superb 6K video using frame rates up to 60p and using a wide variety of formats. Dual Shooting lets you cover the same event with Full HD video and 17-megapixel (16:9) photos – capturing stills and video separately and simultaneously.

Get home in first place

Win the race – getting photos and video back to your client right when they need them. Lightning-fast connectivity is easy to use when the pressure’s on. Wi-Fi 6E1 with MIMO antennas, and 2.5G BASE-T ethernet, deliver super-stable performance.

The ultimate photographic assistant

Our flagship EOS is packed with advanced technology, including an 8.5-stop Image Stabilizer, a best-in-class 9.44m-dot electronic viewfinder, and in-camera image upscaling and noise reduction. Be inspired by the superb build quality that pros around the world have come to love.

Cross-type AF

The EOS R1’s Cross-type AF is sensitive to both horizontal and vertical lines, giving you more precision and sensitivity, particularly in low light and low contrast.

Versatile Vari-Angle screen

A 3.5-inch, 2.1 million-dot touch-sensitive viewscreen pivots away from the camera body and swivels through 270˚, making it easy and instinctive to shoot from different angles.

Electronic shutter

Freeze the fastest action using electronic shutter speeds up to 1/64,000sec, with imperceptible rolling shutter distortion. Zero viewfinder blackout means you are never in the dark.

DIGIC Accelerator + DIGIC X

Two state-of-the-art image processors, working in tandem, allow the EOS R1 to process huge amounts of data faster than ever before. The result is phenomenal speed, accuracy and image quality.

Fast wireless connectivity

Support for Wi-Fi 6E (2.4GHz/5GHz/6GHz, depending on region) allows fast image transfer to devices and computers, as well as remote camera control. Built-in MIMO antennas deliver outstanding reliability.

RF lens mount

Designed to maximise lens-design possibilities, the RF lens mount allows for optical designs that were previously impossible, as well as more portable lenses that can be with you more often. The EOS R1 uses a lens’s Iris Ring for both stills and video.

Advanced 9.44m-dot EVF

This class-leading high-resolution EVF gives a view of the world that surpasses many optical viewfinders in terms of clarity and precision. Enjoy adjustable magnification, locking dioptre adjustment, fogging resistance, and blackout-free shooting.

Next generation Eye-Control AF

Select an AF point simply by looking at it. Our next generation Eye Control AF uses new optics and a revised line-of-sight algorithm running at double speed. The result feels like the EOS R1 is reading your mind.

Dual memory-card slots

The EOS R1 has space for two ultrafast CFExpress cards, with a maximum capacity of 2TB per card for multiple proxy and format options.

In-camera crop

Accelerate your workflow by cropping images in-camera, with the option to use the EOS R1’s neural-network upscaling to create a new version with up to 4 times the resolution.

USB charging

Stay prepared when you’re on the move, with convenient recharging. The EOS R1 also connects via USB to computers and devices running a range of camera-control, file-transfer and video streaming apps.

Lockable Dioptre adjustment dial

Lock in your own personal eyesight prescription, so the view through the EOS R1’s viewfinder is always pin-sharp and crystal clear

Two-stage AF-ON button

The AF-ON button can now be half-pressed or fully depressed, with each stage being fully customisable. It’s easy to find with the camera at your eye and allows more instinctive control of many of the EOS R1’s features.

Customisable controls

A camera that speaks your language. Set up the EOS R1 exactly how you want it, to suit your shooting style as well as the situation you’re working in. Custom controls are separate for video, stills and playback, plus save your settings to a memory card.

Magnesium-alloy body and weather resistant seals

Built to withstand the rigours of professional work.

Full-size Type A HDMI port

For stable connections to monitors and external recorders, whether you’re in the studio or on location

2.5 GBASE-T Ethernet

Fast, stable, wired connections to networks, for image and video file transfer and remote control.

CREATIVITY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF

With Action Priority mode that automatically determines the subject in football, volleyball and basketball.

Cross-type AF

Our Dual Pixel Intelligent AF is sensitive to horizontal and vertical lines for greater precision.

24.2 megapixel, back-illuminated, stacked sensor

Truly incredible, low-light performance, with enough speed to virtually eliminate rolling shutter.

Capture stills and video concurrently

Press the shutter release while shooting Full HD video to capture a burst of jpeg images at the same time.

In-camera upscaling

Canon’s deep-learning technology allows images from the high sensitivity sensor to be enlarged faithfully and accurately by up to four times, up to 96 megapixels.

40fps shooting with AF and AE

With Pre-continuous shooting to capture moments that happened before you pressed the button – even when shooting RAW

Fast and accurate

Focus in conditions as dark as -7.5 EV – roughly the brightness of the aurora borealis – locking on with precision and accuracy.

Superb video for hybrid creatives

Capture 6K RAW video up to 60p, 4K up to 120p and 2K up to 240p, all from the full width of the full-frame sensor.

Cutting-edge connectivity

Our best-connected camera yet? Many options including Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5G BASE-T ethernet ensure your images reach your client first.

AUTOFOCUS POWERED BY DEEP LEARNING

The EOS R1 harnesses the power of deep-learning to identify subjects, while its DIGIC Accelerator processor tracks and captures them more accurately than ever. Action Priority mode can even identify the subject based on the action, helping you predict what is coming next.

The EOS R1’s AF system can recognise and automatically distinguish different subjects and track them even if they are briefly obscured from view or small in the frame.

  • Eyes - EOS R1 instantly locks onto a subjects’ eyes if they are visible.
  • Faces - Recognises faces and heads, even when the subject is wearing a helmet or mask.
  • Bodies - People are tracked by their whole body, or just the upper portion of it.
  • Sports - Action Priority determines what’s happening in football, volleyball and basketball, and moves the active AF point.
  • Animals, cars and aircraft - EOS R1 recognises other subjects too, helping you get pin-sharp results.

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF with Cross-type AF points

EOS R1 has Cross-type AF that is sensitive to horizontal and vertical detail. This gives more sensitivity and precision, especially in low light and low-contrast conditions.

Jaw-dropping image quality

A new 24-megapixel sensor delivers incredible results. A lightning-fast, stacked CMOS design is sensitive in low light. A low-pass filter with 16 point separation reduces moiré and false colour while still capturing very detailed resolution.

Stills and video. Separately and simultaneously

Designed for professional hybrid shooters covering events. With the EOS R1’s Dual Shooting function switched on, a press of the shutter-release button while shooting Full HD video captures 5616x3168 pixel (17MP) JPG photos at up to 10fps using the same shutter speed – all without interrupting video capture.

EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE – NOW AS STANDARD

Stop Time

Freeze fleeting moments in time like never before: 40 frames per second continuous shooting pairs with a lightning-fast 1/64,000 sec electronic shutter and minimal rolling shutter distortion for incredible results.

Pre-Continuous Shooting

Half press the shutter release button to begin continuously buffering 20 frames. At the moment you take the shot, these ‘pre-captured’ frames are stored too. At EOS R1’s maximum 40fps shooting speed, this means you’ll record the half-second before you pressed the shutter release. At slower shooting speeds, the pre-capture time gets longer, giving you even more flexibility.

"It allows you once you half press the shutter to roll and not miss those late moments. Just saves the day"

Atiba Jefferson
Canon USA Explorer of Light

Image upscaling, powered by deep-learning

Find exquisite detail in the closest of crops. Enlarge images by up to four times in-camera, producing gallery-ready photos at up to 96-megapixels, which look sensational.

Forging multiple strong connections

Be the first to get your images and video back to the client. The EOS R1 boasts more ways to get connected and the speed you need to hit your goal of the top spot on the page.

  2. Cross-type AF does not function(vertical-line detection only) during movie recording, or during Servo AF High-speed continuous shooting+ mode when shooting with the Mechanical shutter or with the Electronic 1st-curtain. For lens related details, please refer to [Supplemental Information] for [EOS R1] in “https://cam.start.canon”.
  3. The lowest light AF is available with an f/1.2 lens, centre AF point, One-Shot AF, at 23°C / 73°F, ISO 100 Except RF lenses with a Defocus Smoothing (DS) coating
  4. Only available for still photos and electronic shutter. If the person's size on the screen is small, or if part of the subject is hidden or multiple subjects are crowded together, identification accuracy may decrease.
  5. Supported actions: - Soccer: Shoot, header, short pass, long pass, dribble, clear, place kick, save by keeper, throw in, sliding tackle - Basketball: Shoot, rebound, pass, dribble, free throw, jump ball - Volleyball: Spike, toss, receive, serve

  9. Low light AF performance will be reduced when supress low frames is used
  10. When using EL/EX Speedlite and [Sync speed priority: Enable] is set
  11. Under Canon testing standards with CFexpress card and during servo AF, only RF lenses and some EF lenses can be used for continuous shooting at the maximum speed. The continuous shooting speed may be reduced by the lens, shutter speed, aperture, flash, subject conditions, and brightness (for example, when shooting in a dark place). Continuous shooting speed is slower when flicker is detected, even if anti-flicker shooting is off. For more details please see the User's Guide at “https://cam.start.canon”
  12. Supported images: JPEG / HEIF images, Upscaled images can be cropped. The following images cannot be in-camera upscaled: RAW/C-RAW images, Images shot with a camera that is not the same model, Images resized or cropped by a camera, computer, or other device, In-camera upscaled images, Image size: Other than L, [Cropping/aspect ratio]: Other than Full-frame, Images shot with cropped shooting using an RF-S or EF-S lens, Images frame grabbed from movies, Images shot with the [Dual shooting (still&movie): On] setting. It may take some time for processing images. Shooting is not possible until the image processing finishes
  13. 4K UHD and Full HD are 94% horizontal coverage of the image area, RAW, 4K DCI and 2K DCI are 100%, DCI movie cropping mode is 62% and UHD/HD movie cropping mode is 58.5% of the horizonal area.
  14. If the cameras internal temperature becomes too high the maximum recording time will be reduced
  15. With [High Frame Rate: Disable] setting, movie is recorded with audio and the movie is played back at actual speed. With [High Frame Rate: Enable] setting, no audio is recorded and the movie is played in slow motion at 29.97 fps (NTSC) /25.00 fps (PAL) when played back.
  16. The camera cannot frame grab still photos from RAW movies and movies recorded when [Custom Picture: On] is set. In-camera resizing or cropping and in-camera upscaling are not available for frame-grabbed still photos.
  17. Movie recording does not stop during still photo shooting. Movies are recorded to card 1, and still photos are recorded to card 2 (a card needs to be inserted in each slot). The settings during movie recording are applied to still photos. AF/AE operates with the settings suitable for movie recording. The colour tone may differ from that of normal still photos depending on the timing of still photo shooting. Additional restrictions may apply for more details please see the User's Guide. (https://cam.start.canon)
  18. HDMI CEC not supported
  19. Blur/out-of-focus detection may not be performed for some scenes or subjects, or results may be inaccurate. Only JPEG or HEIF images are evaluated, and only when the camera is set to use the electronic shutter and detect people or eyes.
  20. Although the camera features dust- and water-resistant construction, this cannot completely prevent dust or water droplets from entering the camera. To ensure adequate weather sealing, the supplied shoe cover should be used unless a weather sealed accessory is inserted in the Multi Function shoe.

Announcing the development of the EOS R1 Full-Frame camera: the first flagship model for the EOS R SYSTEM

custom image

GET AHEAD OF THE GAME WITH THE EOS R1

Launching in 2024

Today we announced the development of the EOS R1 full-frame camera- the first flagship model for the EOS R SYSTEM with high performance at its heart. Geared towards professionals, the EOS R1 brings together Canon’s cutting-edge technology and combines top-class performance with the strong durability and high reliability sought in a flagship model.

On your marks…

The EOS R1 will persistently track subjects in sport scenarios, even when they’re momentarily hidden from view – for example, when subjects intersect in team sports. The newly developed Action Priority function will automatically detect the main subject performing a specific action (such as shooting a ball) and instantly move the AF frame, allowing photographers to capture key moments.

Get set…

The combination of a new image-processing system and Deep-Learning technologies will achieve high-speed and high-accuracy subject recognition and contribute to improved image quality.

Go!

We’ll be launching EOS R1 this year. Canon will continue to expand the EOS R SYSTEM lineup of cameras and RF lenses, thereby continuing to meet the demands of a wide range of users and contribute to the development of photography and video culture.

Yours faithfully,
Canon Europe Ltd

We are excited to inform you about an upcoming demo day featuring the latest products from Canon – the EOS R1 and EOS R5. This event is a fantastic opportunity to explore these cutting-edge cameras and experience their advanced features firsthand.

NB - the cameras present will be pre-production demo units, so you are welcome to use and test them but customers cannot put their own cards in or take any images away.
